The above mentioned direction is provided by International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP), which aims to evolve and flourish the students not only intellectually but also emotionally and ethically.  Chosen by many students all over the world, IBDP provides a perfect platform for its students to gain international recognition and get selected by any prestigious university.

IBDP Chemistry

Science holds a lot of relevance and significance in human lives, with most of the developments getting attributed to it. IBDP has always laid focus on Chemistry, as a branch of Central Science and strives to develop excellent academic knowledge along with investigation skills.

An Overview of IBDP Chemistry Course

The curriculum of IB DP Chemistry can be studied at a higher levels and lower levels, with both levels possessing their own set of requirements that are mentioned hereunder:

Level Minimum Number of Hours Weightage
Higher 240 hours Internal assessment: 20%
External assessment: 80%
Standard 150 hours Internal assessment: 20%
External assessment: 80%

*The data above represents the current syllabus and pattern. However, this can change owing to the pandemic situation.

Internal assessment

The internal assessment accounts for 20% of the final assessment, wherein only a single investigation is conducted. In this investigation, students are required to use databases and different techniques of modelling, simulation or hybrid to prepare a write-up, which has 6 to 12 pages. This work is externally moderated by the IB, while an internal assessment is carried out by the teachers themselves.

External assessment

This assessment is based on three written papers, which are conducted at both the Standard level and Higher level. A detailed break-up is given below:

At Standard Level

Papers Format Time (in minutes) Weightage (in %)
Paper 1 *Thirty Multiple Choice Questions 45 minutes 20 %
Paper 2 *Short answer and Extended Response Questions 75 minutes 40%
Paper 3 Questions based on Data and Practical along with short answer and extended response questions 60 minutes 20%

*The questions of Paper 1 and Paper 2 are based on “Core”, which comprises topics such as Stoichiometric relationships, Atomic structure, Periodicity, Chemical bonding and structure, etc.

At Higher Level

Papers Format Time (in minutes) Weightage (in %)
Paper 1 *Forty Multiple Choice Questions 60 minutes 20 %
Paper 2 *Short answer and Extended Response Questions 135 minutes 36%
Paper 3 Questions based on Data and Practical along with short answer and extended response questions 75 minutes 24%

*The questions of Paper 1 and Paper 2, are based on both “Core” and “Additional Higher Level (AHL)”, which comprises subjects such as Atomic structure, Acids and bases, Redox processes, Organic chemistry, etc.

Challenges Faced By The Students of IB DP Chemistry

The courses organized by International Baccalaureate are renowned world-over for their supremacy, depth and difficulty level.  IB for its students studying Chemistry, tests them both internally and externally, wherein they have to develop at least a 6-page write up based on investigation and also write three different papers. This is certainly challenging, and sturdy, with even the brightest of students requiring expert help.

Further, the minimum number of hours to be committed at each level along with limited timings associated with each paper makes it really difficult for the students to ace these exams on their own. This is where IB Chemistry Tutor steps in, to make the life of Chemistry students easier and direct them on a path, which is fruitful and prosperous.
